Colonial City; Revolutionary Battleground is the second e-seminar in a series based on Kenneth T. Jackson's legendary Columbia course, which he has taught for more than three decades, on the history of New York City. In this e-seminar, Professor Jackson begins by analyzing the commercial roots of Dutch New Amsterdam and how the Dutch period helped to shape the lasting character of the city. He then examines the often unrecognized but nevertheless crucial role that New York City played in the American Revolution. Moving on to a discussion of the period following the Revolution, Professor Jackson looks at the Erie Canal and the reasons for the impact that this "relatively unimpressive ditch" had on the economic development of New York City and of the United States as a whole in the nineteenth century.
